This morning Google made an announcement of a future algorithm update happening at some point next year, giving site owners advanced notice for when that judgment day comes. They are calling it Core Web Vitals and it’s about improving page experience:
Core Web Vitals are a set of real-world, user-centered metrics that quantify key aspects of the user experience. They measure dimensions of web usability such as load time, interactivity, and the stability of content as it loads.
THIS BIT: load time, interactivity, and the stability of content as it loads.
Google is prewarning business owners you're going to be expected to build a site to standards soon that consider things that really matter, most companies are unaware of the specifications required to build a site that says, loads under a second. But when you are competing at the top of SERPs, usability, speed, functionality, paint to page, is where you will find the margin.
Companies especially SMBs will really be pressed with this, watch for wix and wysiwyg saas DIY own that space…. sleek sites aren't cheap, require real skills, and industries that are media heavy on_load, will really struggle.
Far too often you see industry events selling tickets, keynote speakers splashed with accolades of buzz like ‘deep-dive educator’, ‘disruption’ spend a day with ‘ Australia’s top digital masterminds’… all wrapped up in a 2017 Wordpress template, with a site load speed of 47 years and page weight of 1 tonne ... digital masterminds.
You know, perhaps sharpen the mastermind blade an take a few hours an just learn the basic fundamentals of HTML?
Both Neil Patel and Ezoic wrote articles on how to prepare and improve your Largest Contentful Paint
- a new metric for me that is now showing in Google Search Console if you have pages taking longer then 2.5s to load.
Look: The internet is about to change in a big way, very few companies will be ready for, the shift will be silent but swift, your old site will still work just fine, it just won't be seen.
The biggest thing is to focus on building a better website and delivering a better experience to the user.
That means something, these words above in that sentence have real meanings they form a structure of actions and behaviours that web build stacks greatly accommodate and enhance, so much more than buzzwords and social social social.
Fundamentals: will trump everything else you’re working on to improve these metrics. Its always been about fundamentals.
